"What is intriguing people that we call Kogis? In 400 years the world has changed "developed" and this precolombian society, is the last that there is still intact. This culture is at the same time ancient and modern, surprisingly envolved in the essentials domains to understanding the world. His wisdom has one objective finding and keeping a balance in creative and destructive energies that the human finds during its existence. They are convinced that our ignorance and our ambition only succeed in more rapidly to the extinction of all life on earth "
T.C. MCLUHAN, L’Esprit de la Terre, Editions du Rocher 1998
Traditional Kogi religion is closely related to Kogi ideas about the structure and functioning of the Universe, and Kogi cosmology is a model for survival in that it moulds individual behaviour into a plan of actions or avoidances that are oriented toward the maintenance of a viable equilibrium between Man’s demands and Nature’s resources. In this manner the individual and society at large must both carry the burden of great responsibilities which, in the Kogi view, extend not only to their society but to the whole of mankind.
The kogis dedicate their lives to the learning of ‘The Law of the Mother’, the body of esoteric knowledge that contains ‘the myths and traditions, the songs and spells, and all the rules that regulate ritual’. A man ‘should never work for material gain and should not make efforts to acquire more than he needs in order to feed and house his family’ but should dedicate himself to learning so as to ‘contribute to the maintenance of the world order ... and reach old age in a state of wisdom and tolérance.
The Kogi believe they are the "Elder Brothers," the guardians of life on Earth. Through their mind power and meditation they keep the world in balance. They live in "Aluna," an inner world of thought and potential. They are now concerned because their Mountain is dying. The kogis think that we are the kid brothers because our ignorance and lack of spirituality.
If they protect their sacred mountain home, the Koguis believe they will keep the entire planet in balance. They call themselves the Elder Brothers, the guardians of the Earth, and the rest of modern civilization are the Younger Brothers, whose exploitative practices are destroying the mountain’s ecosystem and, by extension, the rest of the planet.. There are diverse forms of existence; there is the material world that arose from Sé and there is much that exists only in spirit. The law of Sé is to build with thought. That is why we must ask permission to use what we need. It is necessary to educate people in the law of Sé. This law was given to the Elder Brothers and that is why it is our responsibility to protect all that exists.
